What is Your Super Power

(c) spacious planet

What’s your super power?

Imagine being completely invincible in your practice. Imagine people looking to you to help them solve their problems and fulfil their potential. Imagine people finally realizing what a superhero you are.

When I was a girl, I was simply enamoured with Superman and Wonderwoman. I loved the idea that amazing magic brilliance (and the ability to leap tall buildings) lurked below that seemingly “normal” exterior. Who knew!?  I also loved that superheroes were fighting for good, and no matter what enemy they crossed paths with, they always emerged victorious in the end.

I spent many a summer afternoon bounding through my backyard in my underroos and cape, wowing the neighbors with my invisible jet and flash fabulous superpowers. My kindly neighbors and relatives would often humor me, asking me “Wow,  that certainly is a nice cape. Tell me, what can you do?”

“I’m SuperJessica”,  I would tell them, “and (depending on the day) I can– jump from my jungle gym into the snow”/ “Fly”/ “Save people in need”/ or ““eat a whole lemon cake”. My talents were all over the place.

And my neighbors were kindly always very impressed.

Now that I’m all ‘growed’ up, I admit that I still love these themes. Admittedly, I retired the underoos and cape along time ago, and for many years I even let myself forget that I had any special super powers to speak of  for many many years. But tapping back into my own super powers was the start of my incredibly business journey.

What I came to realize is that what I was doing as a child, even then, was the early stages of marketing joy. I was telling my neighbors, in no uncertain terms and with utter confidence, that thing I did better than anyone else. I was marketing myself around my super power. Woo hoo!

And now that I’m all grown up, I realize something else, too. Something even cooler. What’s most fabulous to me is that everyone- every last one of you- has a super power, too. Every last one of you has something you do amazingly well, a gift that is completely unique.

And it is this super power that is at the heart of your practice, and should be the cornerstone of your marketing. It’s what makes you shine, and the gift that you alone have to offer.

Compare the two introductions pre and post superhero makeover:

“I’m Lori and I’m a massage therapist.”  versus
“I’m Lori and I help people escape from chronic pain after debilitating injuries or surgeries.”

“I’m Kate and I’m an acupuncturist” versus
“I’m Kate and I help women who struggle to have children conceive wonderbabies without costly drugs, surgery, or painful procedures.”

So darling heart, what’s your super power? Can you paint a portrait like nobody’s business? Can you teach a yoga class that brings your students to rapture? Can you guide a client through a painful transition and through to the other side with ease? Whatever your power is, Love,  it’s time to share it BIG TIME! In other words, it’s time to do some joyful marketing.

At its heart, strategic marketing isn’t about selling or schmoozing or yicky tactics. It’s really about sharing this super power with the world. And when people know your superpower, they know how you can help them (or help someone that they know).

When it comes down to it, sharing your super power  with others is being of service and letting others know how you can help.

Sure, Clark Kent may have kept his secret under wraps, but the rest of us owe it to the world to share our gifts. So get out there and use your super powers to help others remember how to fly!

Practice Attraction: Do what you love- strategically

Practice Attraction: Do what you love- strategically

We’ve been hearing it for years: do what you love, and the money will follow. While I love the spirit behind this idea, there is an implication that all it takes to succeed in the world is passion and good intentions. It completely overlooks the fact that there is so much more to success than [...]

Gratitude: Why saying thanks is important in business

Gratitude: Why saying thanks is important in business

While I know Thanksgiving isn’t for several months, I’m thinking today about the importance of giving thanks and expressing gratitude and how it impact our practices. Walk the Talk

Walk the Talk

“Do what I say, not what I do” is something my grandmother used to say all the time. It was an expression that drove me mad, as all of her children just grew up to live out the behavior she modeled, not what she told them (including mouthing that same expression). But what does this [...]
